“As a former Special Agent with the FBI, I have learned to appreciate the value of incorporating multiple disciplines into a well-balanced program.”

Finally…the exact type of Martial Arts program I have been looking for. Since our relocation back to the Folsom area, I had been actively looking for the right Martial Arts center for my family. After speaking with Master Jason, I knew that I found what I was looking for with the Folsom Martial Arts Center.

As a former Special Agent with the FBI, I have learned to appreciate the value of incorporating multiple disciplines into a well-balanced program. I wasn’t interested in a single art form type of program. Federal and local law enforcement agencies, as well as elite military units, utilize the best of all forms of self-defense to quickly deal with threats and subdue their attackers. That is what I was looking for and that is what I found with Master Jason.

Master Jason’s program incorporates the best of Kickboxing, Boxing, Military TaeKwonDo, Thai-Boxing, Hapkido, Brazilian Jui Jitsu, and others, to create a very well balanced and effective form of self-defense. He is an incredible instructor providing a very welcoming environment for children and adults alike.

Master Jason, I could not have asked for anything more. Thank you for all of your hard work in putting together such a fantastic program and the care with which you handle your students.

What’s Tactical Self Defense?

If you’re reading this article, you’re probably wondering what Tactical Self Defense (TSD) is, how it is different from other martial arts and what other schools teach, and why do I need to learn TSD for self protection rather than MMA, Karate, Taekwondo, Krav Maga, or other martial arts?

The answer is simple: In a self-defense situation, TSD will give you the tools that you need to defend against and counter-attack your attacker or better yet…have him running towards the hills like a little school girl.

Ladies and gentlemen, you are NOT going to be learning fancy, delicate, mesmerizing Hollywood fighting that people “oooh” and “aaahh” at when watching a movie, tournament, or sport fighting event. This is not a program designed to be about fitness – like many other martial arts programs. Tactical Self Defense is NO – I repeat – NO joke….especially when it can save your life. It is a Close-Quarter-Combat system designed to give you a full advantage over your attacker, or attackers, and get you out of the combat fight situation you’ve found yourself in FAST!

While tournament and sport fighting might appeal to certain people, it is not the type of martial art that you can rely on in a self-defense situation.
This might sound harsh, but it’s the plain truth. The problem with tournament, sport fighting, and other fitness-based martial arts is that you are taught to follow strict sparring rules, which allow you to strike only certain areas on your opponent. And this…is a deadly problem.

When you are allowed to strike only certain areas, you limit your ability to fully defend yourself from someone who could potentially take your life. The unfortunate truth is that we cannot cherry pick who our attacker is going to be – and we certainly can’t ask our attacker to “Let me strike you only on your right side.” You must have a limitless mindset by being taught limitless strategy and tactics for Close Quarter Fight situations!

TSD contains three key ingredients for limitless self-defense that many other martial arts do not combine or refuse to teach: Offensive, defensive and counter-attacking. Simply put, you learn how to attack, how to defend, and how to counter-attack if someone starts attacking you.

Unlike many other martial arts, Tactical Self Defense is not dogmatic and does not limit what you will learn.

TSD will help you go from being the proposed victim to the aggressor – as stated earlier, you will leave your attacker running towards the hills. Basically, you become your own bodyguard and hit man!

Why Should I Learn Tactical Self Defense?

Now comes the next question that you might be asking yourself: Why should I learn Tactical Self Defense?

Well, ask yourself this: What is the value of your personal safety? If you are like most people who have families (maybe a wife, husband or young children), then you would probably agree that your personal safety is priceless – nothing in the world is more valuable or precious than your life – especially when you have people in this world who mean more to you than life itself.

Some people might argue that nothing in life is certain, and so why would anyone want to live a life of “fear” that a ruthless criminal is going to cross your path someday?

While you certainly are not encouraged to live a life of fear and paranoia, it is true that nothing in life is certain – you may or may not come across someone who intends to physically hurt you.

So why not give yourself the tools that you’ll need in a self-defense situation just in case you need them?

We purchase car insurance and health insurance just in case we get into a car accident or come down with a bad case of pneumonia. You can think of Tactical Self Defense as something that you would use just in case.

“Tactical?” That Sounds Way Too Hard For Me!

I know what you’re thinking. The word “tactical” sounds intimidating and has probably planted images in your head of a tall, mean, brawly drill sergeant with a scowl on his face.

Despite its name, however, I promise that you will NOT be getting a military boot camp experience when you learn Tactical Self Defense at Folsom Martial Arts Center. The term “tactical” just denotes a different, more self-defense based driven emphasis on close quarter reality combat situations than spending time on sport rules and training.

Tactical Self Defense will give you a good workout – you will be exercising and using muscles in places you never knew you had muscles – but you will also be developing a valuable skill at the same time. TSD is not a prejudiced type of martial art – it can be done by anyone, at any fitness level – men or women, old, young or somewhere in between.

Here’s What You Will Learn:

  • Effective NO NONSENSE self-defense skills that WILL save you and your family’s life in any life-threatening situation!
  • Learn how to disarm an aggressive, determined, knife wielding, criminal attacker!
  • In the event of a gun attack, discover what you need to know that will save you and your family’s life!
  • Secrets of how to strip away a club wielding killer’s weapon and escape without being knocked unconscious!
  • Learn how to avoid the mistakes that most people make, which turns them into an easy target for becoming a victim of a deadly crime!
  • How to effectively and quickly end a fight no matter how large your attacker!
  • Dramatically effective, useful ground fighting skills taught from a military approach of survival and not a wrestling approach to merely “tap out” your opponent!
  • Military (Marine Corps) mindset that maximizes your ability to act and respond without freezing up!
  • Skills to defend yourself and take out multiple attackers who are hell bent on taking what they came for – your LIFE!
  • Become a Jason Bourne in a short period of time and learn how you can take out anyone anywhere. Take comfort in knowing your safety and
  • your family’s safety won’t be compromised!
  • Master ways to use your own strength (even if you feel you are weak) to defend yourself with ease and simplicity!

“From the average Soccer mom, to the fittest person here is friendly and attitude free.”

I have been to just about every Martial Arts school and met just about every Martial Arts instructor in the greater Sacramento area. All of them told me that they could meet and exceed my needs and expectations. Of course, they didn’t!

I happened to stumble upon Master Jason’s school and curiosity drew me in. When I walked in the door, I was greeted by a very friendly person by the name of Lisa. Lisa had nothing but great things to say about the school and about Master Jason. I told Lisa about my past experience with the martial arts and about my last serious instructor, who was a Marine and a very “no non-sense” kind of man.

Well, Lisa was very eager & enthusiastic to tell me that Master Jason could probably teach me the way my old instructor did, and that I would be surprised at his ability to teach. I thought silently, here we go again!!! Having one leg shorter than the other and being “handicapped”, I had my doubts. Man, was she right!!!!!

I sat down and spoke to Master Jason about my goals, and what I was looking for in an instructor. While talking to him, I knew right then and there he was and is the real deal!!!! When I started, I expected him to go through the motions of review, a lot of air punching and kicking, and for him to see where my skill set was, and like all the others, hold back until 3 or 4 more sessions later to really give me a true lesson in the martial arts. He had me sweating in the first 5 minutes of training & did not let up until the end of the lesson.

Like a Drill Sergeant, he was ordering me to push, keep going, and don’t give up!!! I was floored and pleasantly amazed at his ability to train and to motivate. Training here has been the best decision I ever made & hope to reach many goals under the wing of Master Jason. He is helping me to achieve personal goals of competing & being a better martial artist and a better person. I truly look forward to training everytime I am on the mat.

But the best part of the school is the people who train here. I feel right at home with everyone here. From the average Soccer mom, to the fittest person here is friendly and attitude free.

Street Self Defense Is NO UFC Fight!

As much as I enjoy watching a good fight, whether that is a UFC fight or a good Boxing match, I know for a fact that street fights take on a whole different set of parameters. So, think about this… If you want to win a UFC or Boxing match, how do you train?

You find the BEST UFC/MMA or Boxing gym and surround yourself with a great coach and team that will improve your skills so well that you become undefeatable. That makes logical sense, so…

This goes the same for street self defense; if you want to learn how to stay alive in a street fight situation, or if you are attacked in your home, then what would the answer be? You’d want to find the best coach and team that will give you these skills.

SD gives you the close quarter combat skills to deal with the reality of street fights or being attacked in your own home. Now, MMA/UFC gyms and Boxing gyms don’t cover these things. You end up getting a great fitness workout and learning good “rule driven” fight skills, but when you’re attacked on the street you don’t have time to dance around a ring – you need to end it in a split second and get yourself or your family to safety.

These close quarter combat skills have been taught for centuries by martial artist, but majority of all school don’t know much about them anymore because of “sport” enthusiasm having overtaken their curriculum.

I stripe out all “sport” emphasis in my TSD classes and teach from the perspective of an actual street fight.

You learn how to read the situation and determine if you are going to need to fight. Then, you learn a missing link in most martial arts based systems of avoidance and de-escalation. Then, you learn the most effective Close Quarter Combat from military systems around the world to include our vicious WWII strategies and tactics taught by Col. Rex Applegate and then updated with our modern systems taught to our military and law enforcement personnel to fight dirty and fight to win!

This is a complete stand up to ground close quarter combat program that takes you through a progressive learning process which will build upon itself to quickly and effectively empower and give you the confidence to NOT live in fear, but to live knowing you have the skills to defend yourself and your family in any circumstance. YOU learn to fight to win and destroy an attacker or attackers will to want to fight you.

What Should I Know Before Joining A School?

There are many different factors that play into choosing the right school. What I feel is the most important factor is that you are getting what you pay for.

What you’re paying for should be first-rate instruction as well as a friendly and safe environment to learn. Know that when you are training at Folsom Martial Arts Center you will get exactly that… safe, friendly, WORLD-CLASS TRAINING.

Customer service is one of our main priorities as well. One of the biggest areas you should consider when joining a martial arts school is if they have good customer service and if you are treated with respect when you come into the school. Ask yourself if they really were happy to see you. Did they greet you when you came in? Were you giving time to speak to someone? Whatever you need, our staff will be there to assist you.

One thing that separates our school from all of the others is that we have a specialized system (curriculum) that we teach. This curriculum-system is one of the secrets to our student’s success. Most schools have no curriculum and basically the instructors teach whatever may pop into their heads each night for class. We believe in setting short-, intermediate-, and long-term goals, and then putting a plan in place to reach each of these goals.

Folsom Martial Arts Center doesn’t just concentrate on helping students develop their skills technically and physically, but also MENTALLY! Self Defense is more than the physical side. It is about personal growth as well. Becoming a leader and taking control of your life is way more important.

We all have different reasons for joining, but most of us have the same reason for staying. That is to foster our personal growth that we have gained in the years spent in the academy. Your physical improvement is very important, but neglecting your mental progress will only limit your abilities to reach the goals you set for yourself.

FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

I’m not very athletic or coordinated; can I still learn Tactical Self Defense?

It doesn’t matter how athletic or coordinated you are, anyone can learn Tactical Self Defense. Like anything else physical, it takes practice to learn how to be coordinated and to become athletic. We help you learn in an easy environment, and are super patient to help you through ALL the training! Don’t worry, after a few sessions you will be amazed at what you can do.

Will I get injured?

I place a huge amount of emphasis on doing the techniques correctly so students don’t get injured. I want you to have the best experience while learning and developing great skills, so the classes are designed for progression before being placed in situation you are unaware of. Majority of injuries come from lack of proper technique or form, and being forced to do self defense skills before the student is properly prepared for it. We walk you through each step, so you can feel confident that you won’t get injured and that you will be able to train for a very long time. Beginner can feel confident they will learn each step. I have been doing this a long time and rarely see injuries occur during the classes. It is 100% safe to train in our school.

Am I too old to train?

You are absolutely NOT too old to train in Tactical Self Defense. I have students from all ages training and many who are over 50 in my program loving everything they are learning. If you have the determination and the right attitude, then you will get the best training ever.

Can a woman do Tactical Self Defense?

I hear this often from ladies who would like to train, but are worried that it is for men only. This is totally FALSE! Women can do this and actually perform BETTER than men. I have been teaching men and women for over 20 years and find that women tend to be better at picking this up and learn much faster for reason I don’t know. It is just my experience. If you are determined and come with an attitude to learn and have fun, then you will get a lot out of your training and have a great time. The classes are very welcoming and everyone helps each other learn. The instructors are patient and can help you get through any of the techniques.

I don’t know anything about Self Defense, do you need previous training?

If you are a complete beginner to self defense, then you have NOTHING to worry about. Our program is designed to meet the needs of a beginner student and walk you step-by-step through a progression that will give you A LOT of systematic knowledge of how to use your new skills in a self defense situation. You don’t have to have previous training to do Tactical Self Defense at our school.

“Compared to other martial arts studios that I have trained at Folsom Martial Arts Center focuses on a practical, realistic approach to martial arts.”

I had been studying Taekwondo for over a year now and recently became a member of Folsom Martial Arts Center since November of 2010. Compared to other martial arts studios that I have trained at Folsom Martial Arts Center focuses on a practical, realistic approach to martial arts. The techniques that Master Jason teaches has real world practical uses in self defense which translates into a firm understanding of motion and gives purpose to form.

The other difference that I have seen is Master Jason is interested in you succeeding in your goals; not just moving you through a program but making sure that you gain an understanding of what you are practicing and giving you focus on why you are practicing.

Folsom Martial Arts Center builds your body and mind and helps you to focus on your martial arts goals; you learn a true form of mixed martial arts that can be applied anywhere anytime as needed.

“His Tactical Self Defense classes are Reality Based Fighting taken to a whole new level to give you real skills in a street situation.”

“Seeing my children grow and excel in their martial arts; and as respectful, focused, and self-assured youngsters, gave me the motivation to sign-up for Jason’s other Body Transformation Boot Camp classes and Tactical Self Defense Classes.

Within two short months, I was able to overcome years of inability to stay in-shape, due to 3 ACL reconstructive knee surgeries, and a heart attack.

Master Jason helped me find within myself, the discipline and motivation to lose 4 inches from my waist, go from a zero to an almost six-pack, and have the energy and passion to be actively practicing Tactical Self Defense, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Hapkido, Kickboxing and Eskrima.

In addition, in order to expedite and fully embrace my own physical and personal health, I have begun private lessons in the black belt program with Master Jason. His Tactical Self Defense classes are Reality Based Fighting taken to a whole new level to give you real skills in a street situation.

Being in the military for a great deal of time and being in the front lines of the Iraq War, I knew what the Special Forces High Operates were learning to eliminate a threat in seconds, and I wanted to learn the exact things they knew to protect myself and my family.

I didn’t want some watered down martial arts program that was filled with forms or “rules” for competition. I wanted to learn the best “real fighting, no rules” driven self defense that the special force military guys were getting taught. Well, I found it in Master Jason’s Tactical Self Defense program. With him being a Marine Corps Sergeant veteran, I knew he had to know something, and after our first lesson, I found what I was looking for and was getting the real self defense that works in a street situation.

I have found myself in a few situations prior to learning what I know now and I wish I would have had it back then.

With Jason’s continued guidance, I will be around to share a long, healthy, fit, safe and happy life with my 3 (now reasonably) well-behaved and well-mannered children!”

~ Michael Mattoch – El Dorardo Hills, CA

“I don’t do this for the trophies or for the gold medals”

I admit though at first In my mind, I thought martial arts was something that men practiced if they wanted to learn how to fight. But this was all before I met Master Jason and started training at Folsom Martial Arts Center. Little did I know that there is an entirely different world to martial arts that most people are either oblivious to or are even afraid of – a world in which our mind, body and spirit – together – are part of who we are. I am learning effective, practical self-defense while standing and if I have to go to the ground effective ground fighting skills and I am strengthening my body each time that I train. I can honestly say that I feel confident in my ability to defend myself if need be. The fact that Master Jason is a US Marine and a martial artist of over 20 years makes me feel confident about what he teaches me. You’d think someone who was a Marine would be mean or aggressive, and yet Master Jason is one of the most humble and polite people whom I’ve met. The fear that was once there – the thought of ‘What if someone tries to attack me…what to do I do?’ is no longer as significant as it once was. But I am also strengthening my mind each time that Master Jason makes me meditate and reflect on what I’ve learned in class. Each time that I meditate, I reach a level of mental clarity and I feel a sense of peace. There is no other feeling in the world like it. One of the most important lessons that I’ve learned from the Tactical Self-Defense Training is this: At the end of the day, a woman is someone’s daughter; someone’s sister; someone’s wife; and possibly someone’s mother – at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who she is – she does NOT deserve to be a victim or sexual assault or rape. NO woman does. End of story.”

~ Rose O’Connor – Folsom, CA

“I also know that the police aren’t going to be there exactly when I need them.”

My name is John and I am a retired Army veteran. As an older person, I feel more at risk because I know that criminals tend to prey on those who they view as vulnerable. Typically, this means children, women and older people. Since the economy is in such a horrible condition, law enforcement has been cutting back left and right…and this doesn’t make me feel any safer. I’m more of a realist. As much as I appreciate and support law enforcement (considering my military background), I also know that the police aren’t going to be there exactly when I need them. They’re not going to be there the very second that some low-life criminal decides to attack and rob me. At the end of the day, the only person you should rely on to keep you safe is yourself. That’s just the way I see it. I decided to take tactical self-defense from Master Jason because I knew, instantly, that he was going to teach me what I needed to learn. His prior military background of being in the Marines (better yet – the All Marine Martial Arts Team) told me that this is someone who actually knows what he’s doing – he isn’t an amateur. I feel comfortable knowing that I’m learning self-defense from someone who understands the difference between realistic, tactical self-defense and sport-oriented martial arts. That was another reason why I decided to join Folsom Martial Arts Center – I did not want to learn “sport” martial arts where a whole bunch of tournament rules are going to put my life at risk in the event of a real life or death situation. I enjoy and appreciate what I’m learning from Master Jason. I particularly appreciate the way Master Jason teaches – he makes sure to explain why we’re doing what we do in class, and now I understand. There’s more explanation, description and details in the way that he teaches. I should also mention that I’ve taken martial arts classes and have been to other schools in the past, but looking back, I now realize that I never really learned anything quite as realistic, practical and effective as what Master Jason has taught me.”
